Artist Biography
Arker Kyaw is one of Myanmar’s foremost contemporary artists. Born in Myanmar in 1993, he briefly attended the National University of Art and Culture, before dropping out to join the country’s burgeoning street art and graffiti movement.
He rose to prominence in 2012 with his “ Welcome Obama” mural, which the US president’s landmark visit to the country. Today he is equally well known for his painting, including a series inspired by his pet fish, which became the subject for his first solo exhibition in 2017.
Arker Kyaw’s latest work can be seen on display at the River Gallery in downtown Yangon. His work has featured in exhibitions in Thailand, Indonesia, the Netherlands and Hong Kong.
Arker Kyaw has worked with social enterprise Doh Eain to decorate their alley garden project that help transform disused urban spaces into gardens and childrens’ playground. He is also the WWF’s Myanmar wildlife ambassador, and in 2017 he took part in an event to shine a light on elephant poaching, by creating the world’s biggest paper mache sculpture.
